Doug came home one day and announced that he was going to buy a building and open a pizza place. I just said “OK, honey”. The next thing you know, Doug announces that he found the perfect building! And this is where the story begins.

We purchased the old Helmsman Restaurant building in downtown Belhaven and completely gutted it then Doug began the painstaking task of creating a brand new adventure, The Tavern at Jack’s Neck. Which, by the way, comes from Belhaven’s own history. Back in the 1890s Belhaven was known as Jack’s Neck.

Everything in the Tavern has a story!
The first thing to change was the front of the building. The little windows and siding were removed to make way for the large windows that now grace the front of the building. The day they were placed, they were also boarded up for hurricane Irene. She taught us a lot that day! First she taught us that the windows would hold up and secondly that we needed to raise the floors in certain areas. That is the reason for the many areas of raised floor. We can open the drainage areas in the brick, spray it and set the fans to dry everything out allowing us to be back up and running in no time. She also taught us to brick from the floor up!

The walnut, hickory and cypress came rough cut from Ponzer, NC and was planed and sanded right here in the dining room. Every board in the Tavern was touched by both of us by either, cutting, sanding, staining, hanging or painting on the polyurethane. We had our hands in it all as well as several key people that worked on the Tavern. If we start naming, we might leave someone out, so let me say, they put a lot of love in this place!

We have been collecting things for a long time never thinking that someday they may be used to decorate a restaurant. But here they are! As you entered the Tavern doors you saw immediately that you were in a different kind place, there is nothing like it anywhere around. They’ve been told by several visitors that there is nothing like this all the way to Raleigh! With most of the wood being local, the teak in the bar arrived in the back of Doug’s pickup from Raleigh. The trophy ducks on the walls, came from my son, Jay, the two small boats in the windows came from an antique store in Dunn, NC, the large one in the big window came from Green Front in Raleigh, the shrimp boat, Capt. Jack, came from Harker’s Island, the boat over the bar came from Beulaville, NC. The ships wheel, well, we can’t tell you where that came from but it’s a Great story, the driftwood tree came from Buck Radcliff and the hat at the top was found in the building and is from the Helmsman. The copper lanterns over the Sand Bar we bought thru an auction and the dolphin carving was the result of winning the bid at a NC State drug seizure auction!

The stories are endless so be sure to ask questions, we’ll be glad to share if you have the time and interest.

After a little over two years in the making, the doors opened in November of 2013. Our reason for opening the Tavern was for Pizza, which it has been said we have the best! But when completed, it was obvious that Doug had out created just Pizza a long time ago.

With the different seating areas created, you may want to come early to make sure you can select your special nook. If you have a large crowd, let us know. We'll do our best to seat you at the center Sand Bar or in one of the side rooms. Better yet, reserve your space ahead of time!

Be sure to keep checking our website and on Facebook. We play music all night long from the 60s and 70s and we are known to push back the chairs and dance at any given moment; usually after 9:00pm, but one never knows! We have even had a customer pick up our guitar and play a few songs at the bar.

Our menu offers pasta dishes, steaks, burgers, seafood, salads and incredible desserts. We also feature nightly special creations, which we'll post for your review.
Come for a visit, stay for dinner and experience the Tavern!
